“Be the change that you wish to see in the world” said Gandhi, only this time, it set the right tone for the Agile Leadership workshop for a large global facility management company.

  • How does an organisation embark on a digital transformation journey? 
  • What is the role of its leaders in this journey to support the change in mindset and adoption of new practices? 
  • And what is the difference between ‘being Agile and ‘doing Agile’? 

These were only some of the many topics that we raised and discussed throughout the day, which would help the organisation’s Executive Committee to understand, internalise and apply agile leadership values, principles and methods to their own context.
Prior to the day of training, Yann Hamon - why innovation!’s Managing Director, spent an entire week with the ExCo., to really understand the organisation’s vision, current challenges, future goals, culture and its way of working.

​We started the workshop with a panel discussion about the organisation’s vision and its need to bring about change with new ways of thinking and working. The panel comprised of all the CEOs across markets in Asia, who very clearly articulated the urgency for such a transformation. When the panel was opened to the audience for questions, there was a barrage of some really tough ones from teams all across Asia. “How do you deal with the fear of the probability of not being able to reach your goals” was a question addressed in length. The CEOs were patient and candid about most questions asked, which set the tone for an open exchange of ideas and feedback for the rest of the day.

The audience comprised of 40 leaders across Asia – China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and India, each with challenges that were particular to their own markets. We started by asking them to identify and discuss their existing organisational values and how they matched those of an agile organisation culture. This activity helped leaders across markets to align on the most important values required to bring about change. 
As the day moved on, the large room gradually started looking more like one of our innovation labs, where cross functional teams get together to collaboratively think of solutions; charts, maps, Post-Its and infographics were used to exchange ideas, have discussions and come to conclusions regarding key topics on the agenda. The interactive, hands on activities helped the teams to understand, internalise and apply agile leadership concepts. These got them thinking hard about their current ways of working and what they needed to change in order to move ahead.

Leaders showed particular interest in topics such as the importance of servant leadership, empowerment and delegation, intrinsic motivation and decentralised decision making. We used our motivation and delegation poker cards to explain some fundamental concepts and techniques that leaders could use to tackle these topics in their everyday work.

The session ended with a surprise entry from the Philippines team, which already practices Agile in their way of working. They had put together a video to showcase their agility and how being and doing Agile was in fact was leading to happier and more productive teams. The team was already being the change they wished to see in the rest of the organisation!

We were delighted to bring value to the leaders, receive positive feedback and a show of enthusiasm from them at the end of the day.
